In a statement, GEDIPE announced that it had just achieved a “historic victory” over Google, which it described as the “result of the fight against digital piracy, reinforcing the primacy of the rule of law and national sovereignty in the digital context”.
In June 2023, GEDIPE filed a preliminary injunction against Google Portugal, aiming “to enforce compliance with orders to block websites with illegal content previously identified and confirmed by court ruling”. The following year, on September 9, the Intellectual Property Court (TPI) ruled in favor of GEDIPE, and after all legal remedies had been exhausted, the judgment became final in July 2025: “Google Portugal then notified the court that it had communicated the decision to Google Ireland Ltd., the entity representing the multinational in the European Union, which voluntarily implemented the blocking measures, which have been in force since 17 July 2025”.
